Taste & Learn: Single Malt Scotches!

Enjoy and learn about Scotch Single Malts! This tasting event will offer a selection of three single malt samples, (most 10 or 12 years old) to taste and compare, which is traditionally called a “flight.” For this event, we have designed four different flights, each to appeal to different people with different familiarity or taste preferences for Single Malts. You can pick your flight selection from the four options described below. Each of the three samples in your flight will be a  ¾ pour, so a flight will add up to 2 ½ ounces, about the same as a single scotch cocktail that you might order on your own. Come and pick your flight preference and see what your taste buds tell you.

For the Scotch Skeptics:  (Comparison of single malt versus a bourbon or rye)

• Single Malt: Westward Stout American 
• Old Elk Bourbon
• Knob Creek Rye

For Scotch Novices: (Comparison of three single malts across the Scotch taste spectrum)

• Tomatin Dualchas
• Glenfiddich
• Auchentoshan

For a Smokey Palate: (For the discerning “nose”)

• Laphroaig
• Ardbeg Uigeadail Islay
• Talisker

For a Smooth Palate: (For the “classic” Scotch taste)

• Dalmore
• Tomatin
• Balvenie

The tasting will be lead by long time Scotch connoisseur, Peter Katz, who has been the representative for Southern Glazer Wine & Spirits in the Pittsburgh area for over 25 years and has led numerous tasting events like this.  Joining Peter in leading the tasting will be our own connoisseur, Bob MacDonald '72, who knows a good scotch when he tastes one!

Scotch tasting is being held in collaboration with the Allegheny HYP Club and will be at the AHYP Club on Wednesday, February 8th. We will gather at 5:00pm with the formal tasting to start by 5:30pm. Light hors d'oeuvres and other small edibles to clear palettes will be available.

HBSCP Members can register for the event and receive a single flight (three samples) voucher for $10.  Members can also bring a guest at the same price. The HYP Club bar will be open following the first flight if you want to purchase an additional libation, including any of the four flights.
