Thank you for visiting the website of the Harvard Business School Association of Pittsburgh (HBSAP). The HBSAP has been organized as an HBS alumni club for more than 40 years and serves over 300 alums in the Southwestern Pennsylvania area.  In 2016 -17, our fourth year of a revitalized alumni community, we achieved membership of 53 alums, representing nearly 20% of the HBS MBA and Executive Program alumni in the Pittsburgh area.  

The HBSAP is part of a global clubs network of HBS alumni comprised of more than 100 clubs in over 50 countries. The Club’s purpose is to:

  • Advance the mutual welfare of Harvard Business School and its alumni
  • Provide opportunities for alumni to remain connected to the School and each other
  • Encourage life-long learning, intellectual enrichment, career development, community service, and social events through a variety programs and events
  • Provide opportunities for alumni to meet and serve as advocates, helping to promote and elevate the stature of the School within the community through Club programming
  • Attract the world’s most talented individuals to Harvard Business School

As of November, 2016, twenty-nine states and Washington, D.C. have legalized cannabis and medical marijuana in some form. With a $6 billion medicinal/legal cannabis market, the growing importance this industry represents both medically and culturally is undeniable. And, Pennsylvania has just started registering physicians for its medical marijuana program. Join us as we hear the president of Viridian Capital Advisors, Scott Greiper, discuss an insider’s view on the challenges ahead for medical/legal cannabis in the U.S. and learn about the future of this rapidly growing industry.   The event will be held at the HYP Club (doors open at 5:00 pm with complimentary hors d’oeuvres and cash bar; talk begins at 6:00 pm) and is expected to be well attended.  Reserve early!

5:15 PM to 8:00 PM Wed 18 Oct 2017 Featured Event
The October 18 Happy Hour and HBS Global Networking Night takes a different twist this year.  We will gather in the tasting room at Wigle Whiskey in the Strip District.  After an appropriate tasting of specialties of the house, we will take a tour of the whiskey making process and learn the history of whiskey in western Pennsylvania (did someone say "Rebellion"!).  Wigle Distillery opened to the public in 2012.  In 2015 and 2016, Wigle was the most awarded craft whiskey distillery in the US by the American Craft Spirits Association and won best in Category Craft Rye Whiskey (2015) and best in Category Wheat Whiskey (2016) in a double-blind competition of hundreds of whiskeys from around the country.   Arrivals start at 5:15 pm and the tour begins at 6:00 pm.  On this occasion, one drink is included for each attendee and any additional drinks after the first must be purchased.

Join fellow HBS alums when we learn about the earliest stages of the newest tech businesses being incubated by Project Olympus in the recently established Swartz Center for Entrepreneurship at Carnegie Mellon in the heart of Oakland.  Project Olympus students fuse great ideas with cutting-edge research and projects are nurtured in an environment that supports business development, start-ups, corporate collaboration and strategic partnerships.  In addition to a general orientation provided by Kit Needham, Associate Director and Entrepreneur in Residence, we will hear selected graduate and undergraduate students give us pitches on their new business ideas!  And you can weigh in your questions and perspectives on the “next” Snapchat!  Arrivals start at 5:00 pm, with complimentary hors d'oeuvres, and the program commences at 5:45pm.

Once more, Dr. Stu Hoffman - Chief Economist at PNC Bank who is a regular contributor to CNBC and is often quoted in the Wall Street Journal, the New York Times, and Barron’s - will provide his unique blend of informative and entertaining economic analysis of all that is likely to happen in 2018 – globally, in the U.S., and right here in Pittsburgh.  We’ll also find out how his predictions fared in 2017.  Doors open at 5:30 pm at the HYP Club, with heavy hors d’oeuvres and a cash bar.  Dr. Hoffman remarks commence at 6:15 pm.  Q & A follows!

7:00 PM to 11:00 PM Wed 17 Jan 2018 Featured Event
Join fellow HBS alumni for what Pittsburgh Magazine calls a Best of the ‘Burgh Experience:     The Pittsburgh Banjo Club’s Wednesday practice session.  We will gather at the Elks Lodge on the North Side to enjoy and sing along with the banjo players as they celebrate the group’s 30th anniversary.  This local treasure has donated over $140,000 to charity in its history as it seeks to keep the music of the banjo alive.  Doors open at 7:00pm with complimentary food and a cash bar. The band rehearses from 8:00 – 11:00 pm.  Stay as long as you like!
